Interview - Komparrison

I’ll start by asking who do you feel is the bands biggest influences? As a band our influences are best represented mostly in lyrics - through songwriting styles one artist in particular we like to take influence from would be orla gartland, we admire her unique writing style and have followed her for quite some time. Other influences come from the likes of lily Allen, Amy winehouse, Florence and the machine and Kate Nash, all artists that can take personal struggles/ sensitive subjects and almost make them feel light hearted and fun - something as a band we naturally lean on throughout our music.

Your music feels like a balanced mix of your own experiences and your own humour and satire. What is your song writing process? Do yas write the songs together? Having our supporters be able to  pick up on our humour and own personal experiences makes us ,as a band, quite proud! we absolutely love that it allows them to get to know us!  Our personalities have always been a huge thing for us moving forward and play a large part in our live shows and songwriting! Back to the songs anyways haha, up until more recently we have always enjoyed writing separately and then bringing together what we had and seeing what we both enjoyed and would move forward with. However over the past few months we have taken to co writing a lot more and have came up with music we’re really proud of!

For anyone who hasn’t seen yas perform how would you describe your shows? For a long time our shows were acoustic until late last year where we took time out from doing so many acoustic gigs and gave ourselves the opportunity to start working with a full 5 piece backing band as we wanted to explore a new fuller sound. For us this is what the future as a band looks like. As a whole we would describe our shows as lighthearted and fun but most importantly relatable and that is something we guarantee will always stay the same!

You have released an EP Tales of Youth and a follow up single Remedy. Do you have any plans on any future releases? We never expected people to take to ‘Tales of Youth’ as well as they did with it being a live session Ep but somehow they did and we couldn’t have been happier! Moving forward we have a lot of new music to release and we are currently working on our newest single ‘honestly’ with the help of Jamie Donnelly which will be out to release very shortly! And there is many more surprises yet to be announced also...

What have been some of your favourite shows so far? There’s been so many over the past 4 years, which to us seems absolutely mental that it’s even been that long!! One that sticks out for us in particular would have to be Twisterella 2019! we were originally booked to play a pop up stage at The Twisted Lip, which we did, however on the bus journey down to the festival we received a message from the organisers asking us if we’d like to play a second slot later on in the day at TS one, it seemed so surreal. Gave our selves a quick pep talk in the lassies toilets and smashed our set haha. We honestly didn’t expect to have the turn out to our second set that we had but it was amazing and we couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to play! Our ‘anti-valentines day bash’ gig that we put on at Base Camp earlier this year has to have a mention too, The whole night was a success and just how we wanted people to take to it! Must admit though, we have no idea how the promoters do it seen as though it was the most stressful few months planning it haha!

It seems you have quite a following in the North East. There’s always a great vibe at your shows with people who have favourite tunes and so on. How do you feel the reaction has been to your music? We’ve certainly had a lot of support over the past 4 years towards our music and shows, especially from the Teesside music scene, which is by far the best if we do say so ourselves haha! As a member of the band there is no better feeling for us than looking out into the crowd whilst playing ‘McDonald’s Drive Thru’ and clocking someone that’s hearing it for the first time, instantly ripping the piss out of their mate that most definitely drives a Corsa 1.2! However When we first read this question the very first thing that came to mind was when we were 15 we were playing a random pub in Teesside and the owners had told us to play infront of the baby change... well this little old lady (that looked so innocent) came out of no where and booted the mic and mic stand across the pub for being infront of the baby change haha, it’s so funny to look back on now but that’s the first and last time any one has ever seen both me and Kaitlyn actually gob smacked!

Finally if yas could recommend five locals acts for people to check out who would it be?Getting it down to just 5 seems absolutely mad - there’s just so many talented local musicians! One in particular would be our gals The Samphires, they’re the most lovely bunch of lassies you’ll meet and their tune ‘Coppers’ is beautiful! Be Quiet Shout Loud are another SICK band - their live shows are mega but even in their recorded tracks they still manage to capture the same energy they have live! Similar to BQSL, Undevine Telephone Line are also incredible live and bring so many performing elements, if you ever catch a live show of theirs you definitely would not be disappointed! Both Kickin’ Lilies and Plastic Glass are Sunderland bands that are 1000% worth catching live and adding to your playlist as soon as and all proper lovely lads too!
