Interview Nervous Twitch

Firstly let me ask the name Nervous Twitch where did this come from? (Jay) Nervous Twitch evolved from one of my solo projects; I had a number of garage punk and instrumental tracks online (many that later appeared on our first EP), and so when we played our first gigs we needed to come up with a name pretty quickly. I’m not really entirely sure where the name came from, but we just wanted something that kind of rolled off your tongue and was easy to remember.

Who are the bands biggest influences? (Erin) We get referenced to the Ramones and the Ronettes a lot, and it's a commendable reference as we definitely aspire to write well-crafted pop songs, and we all know the Ramones and Ronettes are the epitome of that! But our influences sit wider than that. We're huge fans of the 80s - 90s indie scene including bands such as The Vaseline's and Television Personalities; who themselves probably also draw inspiration from the Ramones and Ronettes!

You have a new album coming out which you have released a few singles from. What would you say to expect from the new album? In a sentence: fuzzy guitars, hooky baselines and inventive instrumentation; delivered with plenty of energy and attitude. The release of this album has been much-anticipated for us, with the restrictions of 2020 we sat on the release for a little longer, but it's great to finally share it with the world; we're really proud of the outcome.

You have three albums out already which have recently been released on Spotify. How has the response to these albums been? Good to get them on more platforms and reach a wider audience; some of our new fans are surprised that we have a lot of previous material, so it was good that they had a the opportunity for a second revival.

I recently saw you perform at a socially distant show for Get Hip. How did you find this show from a performers point for view? After so many disappointments I was so happy to actually get to play a gig in 2020! Being withdrawn from performing has allowed me to reflect on why it is I love playing music. Although I felt a little more nervous than usual after not playing for months, it was definitely a much need bit of cathartic therapy! And it was great to be back at Get Hip, The Georgian Theatre, and Stockton; it's a great city to play; the audiences are so fun and friendly which always makes the experience so much more enjoyable for me. Thanks to Mark Barrett for asking us - if I had to pick only one city to play Stockton would have definitely been a top choice!

For anyone who has not seen you live how would you describe your live shows? Catchy pop songs, loud guitar hooks, no breaks and a lot of energy! (Get your pint before we start otherwise you might miss it)

What have been some of your favourite gigs so far? Playing Get Hip in 2020 was definitely a fun gig to play, and equally, we played at the Georgian Theatre for Mousetival in 2019 which was also a lot of fun. So many of our favourite bands from around the country were on the bill, it was a fun night. Another enjoyable experience from 2019 was when we supported Shonen Knife. They have such a vibrant aura and their gigs are so much fun, and it was a great opportunity to share their audiences for two shows.

If you could recommend five acts right now who would you pick? We're huge fans of our fellow label mates Duck. They have such a uniquely Duck sound with distorted guitars, stompin' electronic beats, and catchy choruses with a good message. Their album, There are No More Normal Conversations Anymore, was released on Reckless Yes in 2020 and it definitely comes highly recommended by us. Another Reckless Yes band we love are The Crystal Furs; lovely indie-pop songs with some great retro organs, perfect! Last year we really enjoyed US Band The Exbats's album Kicks Hits and Fits. Midnite Snaxxx are another fave from over the pond, they had a single out this month, and we were supposed to be seeing them in California, before 2020 happened! Another recent release we've enjoyed is from Sheffield based indie pop band All Ashore!.
