Interview With Charlotte Grayson

I’ll start by asking who would you say your biggest influences are? I would say my biggest influences are Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves and Dodie. Their ability to tell stories through their songs and write about relatable situations is something I have tried to include in my writing.

You released two singles in 2019. “Drunk Girls” and Tip Toe” what can you tells us about these two songs? Drunk Girls has, in my opinion, quite an indie feel to it and is a song I wrote about my experience in the girls toilet on nights out. I wanted to write about friendships between girls because we can be pitted against each other a lot, and are often not too nice to one another.

Tip Toe reminds my mum of nights out in the 80's and is a song I wrote about being a relationship where you throw all your life's issues at the other person simply because you know they will stay anyway. It describes the moment after the fight when you have to back down and admit you were wrong. The inspiration was from personal experience and it was almost my way of apologizing and explaining myself.

What have been some of your favorite gigs in 2019? My favorite gigs last year were definitely The Gathering Sounds and Salsola's single launch which, funnily enough, were both in the Green Room. they both had attentive audiences and i really enjoyed the other bands at both of those gigs.

You recently announced plans to release your next single “Old Flame”. Which I’m very excited to hear recorded. How would you describe the song to someone who may not have heard it yet? I would say it is an old country song at heart but from the perspective of a 19 year old girl. It tells the story of one of my best friends, and how easy it is to fake feelings when you are drunk. It's a story line nearly everyone can relate to.

You also announced plans on a future album. Is the any news you can share about this? We are hoping for release in April, the name is yet to be decided and it is 14 tracks long. When it is released, I plan on organising a launch event but other than that its a surprise.

What are your goals going into 2020? My goals are to release some more singles which are not on the album and I really want to play a festival. in broader terms, I would love to just gain more followers of my music and see more people attending gigs.

And finally In 2019 you got to play alongside some other great acts. If you could recommend people checking five local acts who would they be?

My top 5 in no particular order would have to be:

  • Komparrison

  • The Warrens

  • Dark Passenger

  • James Leonard Hewitson

  • Jodie Nicholson
