Interview with Rose Bush

First I’ll start by asking about the name Rose Bush Where does this name come from? Well Alice’s middle name is Rose. We see a Rose as an English Folk type sound. Kate Bush is also a big influence on us especially Cornelia. We see the name as a tribute to folk-pop. We also love roses; Alice has a Rose tattooed on her leg, Cornelia loves growing them and we both love beauty and the beast and we are inspired by the enchanted Rose.

Your first single “All I Really See?” Came out last year. What can you tell us about the song? We are both carers, Alice works in a care home and Cornelia works in the community. It’s a very important song to us as it’s about dementia. Alice came up with the chorus one day and had the chords, Cornelia then came up with the verses and Alice just suddenly played about with a piano melody and then it just went from there. The song has evolved as we went on writing it and we see the release as a learning curve.

Do yas have any plans on any future releases? Not at the moment we are concentrating on more gigs. We do love to record and enjoy writing and making all sorts of sounds together. Alice has plans but doesn’t want to say too much at the moment. But for now we are just taking what’s hitting us.

You both also perform as solo artists how do you feel both of your influences mix into the duo? Well Alice brings a lot of pop influence into the music and Cornelia weaves the folk storytelling through it. Cornelia is inspired by Kate Bush, 70's Rock and Folk. Alice is influenced by Lady Gaga, Alternative Rock and Artpop.

What were some of your favourite gigs in 2019?

Well at the end of the year, Goosed Records had one in Doc Browns which was really good. There were some interesting bands in there including Moodbay which were really cool. There was also a couple at slaters pick hosted by Dan and Andrew Walker, unfortunately they had to cancel it as the place closed down, but heard it’s opening again and we are playing there soon which will be cool. There was also Newcastle 02 academy, which is the biggest stage we’ve ever played at. We love playing anywhere to show people our music and meeting and watching other people play.

What are your plans for 2020? Just keep going! We are just following our path. Keep learning new things and to just grow a bit more of a fan base.

If yas could recommend 5 other acts for people to check out who would they be?

  • Andi Grainger, which we met at Newcastle 02 academy for Soundwaves music competition. He’s a cool artist.

  • Dan Walker who we’ve seen play a few times.

  • James Baylin who hosts the open mic in Stokesley at the White Swan. There’s also a few acts there that are really awesome people.

  • NICE GUY, a really cool band and a good friend of ours Micheal McCluskey.

  • Kitchy Retro, they are a very unique band who we also met at Newcastle 02 academy.
